POLICE in Kagera Region have arrested 20 suspected bandits who allegedly hijacked two buses at Kasindaga area on the Muleba and Biharamulo districts border on Monday morning.
Kagera Regional Police Commander (RPC) Philip Kalangi, said the suspects were rounded up following an intensive operation in Burigi and Biharamulo forests.
A group of about ten heavily armed bandits, believed to have crossed into the area from a neighbouring country, ambushed two buses with registration number T 495 AGT and T644 BUR. One of the buses was heading for Dar es Salaam and the other for Arusha.
The bandits, who were armed with two light machine guns (LMG) also overpowered four policemen on escort and escaped with one of their SMG number 14302551. The bandits robbed the passengers of their various properties including cash and mobile phones. The exact value of the stolen items is yet to be established.
